The University of Kentucky Woman's Club (UKWC) welcomes all women – faculty, staff, alumni, their wives, friends and families. We come together in service to UK students, while sharing common interests and engaging in fun social activities.
Our activities include four luncheons each year that offer presentations about timely and relevant topics. We have over 15 Interest Groups for members to enjoy together, including the creative arts, literature and book discussions, bridge, area tours, restaurants and entertainment. Our family play group welcomes moms and tots.
Since the inception of the UKWC Student Aid Fund in 1973, we have awarded 193 undergraduate scholarships and 40 graduate fellowships to non-traditional students at the University of Kentucky. These scholarships and fellowships total over half a million dollars.
Dear UKWC Members,
At an After Five dinner, I was introduced to a new member as the President-in-Waiting. Although I chuckled at this characterization, it did strike a chord with me as I reflect on my time as President-Elect. While I’ve been “waiting,” I was also watching and, most of all, learning. I’d like to take this forum to share with you some of what I’ve learned during my tenure.
First, I learned what an awesome group the past presidents are, many of whom are still very actively involved in the organization. Not only was I overwhelmed by their intellect, talent and energy, but by their words of encouragement and support for me as I enter into the presidency of the UKWC. I lack sufficient words to express my gratitude, and sense of relief, for their willingness to guide and offer counsel during the coming year. You are just AWESOME!
I also learned that the UKWC officers and board members are indeed awesome themselves. Their commitment, intelligence, tenacity, and compassion are inspiring and I feel privileged to be in their company.
The committee chairs whose generosity of time, vitality, and expertise is unbelievable led me to deduce that they are likewise awesome. The organizational skills, patience, and persistence required to lead a group of leaders is beyond belief.
I learned from my experiences with our members, from our newest to those whose membership spans decades, that they are equally awesome. The range of experiences and capabilities within our membership truly astounds me.
In conclusion, my time of waiting exposed the truth. The UK Woman’s Club is in very good hands – not mine, but in the hands of all the past presidents, officers, executive board members, committee chairs, and members who have filled me with awe so many, many times. I know that during this coming year as president when I stumble, as I will do often, the foundation of the UKWC will keep me from falling. Thanks to all for having my back.
